zero waste in £200m regeneration project
09/11/2007
A £200m regeneration project that aims to transform Middlesbrough’s Middlehaven Docks has been revealed by BioRegional Quintain, a sustainable community developer.
RiversideOne, as the former docks will now be known, is expected to boast “a striking landscape of contemporary architecture for living, work and leisure”. Designed by Will Alsop, it will include waterfront homes, offices and leisure facilities at what is claimed will be the UK’s largest zero carbon development.
Pete Halsall, managing director of BioRegional Quintain, said: “We chose the name RiversideOne for two reasons. Firstly, the word ‘Riverside’ has been, and always will be, associated with Middlesbrough and the development’s waterside location.
“Secondly, the ‘One’ element has been adopted in line with our proprietary One Planet Living principles, which fully-support a sustainable lifestyle. According to BioRegional Quintain, One Planet Living communities will adopt the following guiding principles:
- Zero carbon
- Zero waste
- Sustainable transport
- Sustainable materials
- Local and sustainable food
- Sustainable water
- Natural habitats and wildlife
- Culture and heritage
- Equity and fair trade
- Health and happiness
To coincide with the launch of the new identity, BioRegional Quintain has also released details of the first homes that will go on sale at the development.
80 apartments will become available across eight storeys of the CIAC building - an acronym of Community in a Cube - one of the first futuristic sugarcube-shaped residencies that will be built at RiversideOne.
The CIAC will feature a mixture of studios, one and two-bedroom apartments and luxury homes on its top floor
